What can a dirty air filter do to your AC system?

I've responded to a lot of service calls for no cool in the summer time that turned out it was just a dirty air filter. But why do we air filter anyway?

An air conditioning system is a machine that transfers heat from one place to another that uses a blower to move the air throughout the air distribution system called duct-work. The air must travel thru the evaporator coil located inside the indoor unit where the heat transfer begins.

As you know, there are all kinds of bacteria, dusts and the unknowns in the air that need to be filtered so we can breathe better and also keep the machine and the duct-work clean.

Eventually the air filter will be filled with dusts and the unknown particles that restrict the air flow will cause the evaporator coil to freeze up and stop cooling.

I received calls like this all time "Hey, my freon pipe at the outdoor unit is frozen"

First thing I tell people to do is go to the thermostat

1. Turn "OFF" your system

2. Switch the fan to "On" instead of auto

3. Let it run for an hour then set your thermostat to normal, call me back if it's still not working

Most of the time they never call me back. Save them a lot $$$

Forgot to tell you this ,a dirty air filter can cause the compressor to fail due to liquid flood back. I GUARANTEE YOU DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN. So, replace your air filter more regularly.
